Welcome, Meeples.

We have all played boardgames at some point in our lives, usually around the holidays with family and friends, shouting who gets the battleship, which words are and aren't in a dictionary or figuring out who killed who with what and where.

Some of us have continued that trend and offer to introduce those newcomers to the wider world of board gaming, at ours, and the continuing growth of many other groups and events, locally and further afield.

Our events are held here in Burgess Hill for those willing to venture down the rabbit hole into a wonderful, friendly and social world of cardboard and plastic but also offering experienced gamers table space to break out that brand new game or a cherished classic.

About Mid Sussex Meeples

We have all played boardgames at some point in our lives, usually around the holidays with family and friends, shouting who gets the battleship, which words are and aren't in a dictionary or figuring out who killed who with what and where.

Some of us have continued that trend and offer to introduce those newcomers to the wider world of board gaming, at ours, and the continuing growth of many other groups and events, locally and further afield.

We are open to experienced gamers looking to find table space to break out that brand new title that has arrived to those willing to venture down the rabbit hole into a friendly and social world of cardboard and plastic.

Why Board Gaming...?

Ongoing studies are showing that board gaming can help with numerous social and anxiety issues. Being in an activity that does not rely on direct interaction but rather a common activity can seriously help those with issues come out of their shell.

Being a sufferer myself, please believe me when I say that is so far from my thoughts when I am gaming. From the moment I set foot in the first gaming group I went to, I was warmly welcomed, introduced to fellow gamers and enjoyed such a wonderful time that day, I was kicking myself that I hadn't taken the plunge sooner.

It's that feeling I had at that moment all those years ago that I want to bestow upon all new faces that come to our game days.

Helping with social issues is not it's only perk, gaming has also be shown to be fantastic for keeping your brain fully fit and active, even pro longing the onset of any cognitive decline associated with Dementia and Alzheimer.

The world of board gaming has so much to offer every one of us, we ask you to come and experience it for yourselves.

Who Am I...?

Hi, my name is Paul, I created and have run Mid Sussex Meeples since it's creation, here in Burgess Hill in late 2017.

Mid Sussex Meeples was created to add to the ever growing board gaming community in the area and beyond. With groups already established in Crawley, Worthing, Horsham, East Grinstead et al. Burgess Hill seemed the prime location to establish another.

After being diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety back in 2016, I endeavoured to find a new and welcoming social circle I could become a part of after leaving friends and family back down in Devon.

Although I have my moments, I can undoubtedly say that joining this community has been one of the most rewarding groups I could have ever been a part of, both locally and travelling to events and conventions across the country.

Our Group...

Our group is based here in Burgess Hill for both beginners and more experienced players, from the young right through to the young at heart, to gather, play, teach, learn some of the wondrous games that can be played on a table top.

We have many a seasoned, patient pro in gaming, always welcome to teach a new game to people, we understand reading rules isn't the best start so learning as you play with a verbal rulebook at hand is certainly easier and helpful.

The main reason we play is to have fun, laughter can be heard throughout the days as plans go awry and dice rolls just don't come up trumps. Winning is always nice but it's the social interaction, comradery and enjoyment in playing with old and new friends that will have you leaving wanting more.

Our Game Day...

We hold our game days at Cyprus Hall, Cyprus Road, Burgess Hill, RH15 8DX.

We have a few parking spaces at the front of the hall but failing that Cyprus Road Car Park, directly behind the hall has ample space for a small fee for all day parking.

Entrance to our event is just £5 per person for the day, inclusive of Tea/Coffee/Squash and Biscuits. Your welcome to come and go throughout the day, pop out for some lunch or bring some back to carry on gaming.

We have no age restriction and welcome any well behaved children in with an accompanied adult right through to those young at heart pensioners looking for some extra activities to partake in and of course every one in between.

We are on the level with disabled parking at the door and have fully accessible W/C facilities.

All money taken is put back into the club, securing the venue for further events, to promote the club within the local area and to add games to the ever growing library available for you to use at the events.

All our members can make use of the games library I bring to the events, currently consisting of 180+ titles, I bring a selection for all tastes to each event. However if there is anything you would like me to bring from our collection then hop on over to the Mid Sussex Meeples Board Game Geek Collection page for a full list of everything we have and if anything takes your fancy then please drop me a line and I'll be sure to add it to the selection on Game Day.

That's not to say that members can't bring their own games, perish the thought, by all means bring your own, the more the merrier in every sense of the words.

We also host a 'For Sale' table for those gamers looking to raise funds for new games. So if you are looking to lighten your shelves or make some space then you're free to bring down your unwanted board games and put them on the table, together with a post it note with your name and asking price. Buyers can then find you at the group.

It is truly a hobby that brings everyone together and a fantastic sight seeing multiple generations sat down interacting over some card paper and plastic.

Other Local Groups...

Since 2017 we have built solid relationships with many groups in the surrounding area, and even as a result, have had groups emerge from members attending ours in the last 2 years.

Burgess Hill also has a weekly Game Night hosted by the Brickworks Taproom on a Wednesday Evening.

In Crawley we have Crawley Gaming Community that has been running for many years offering Board Gaming, TCG and War Gaming space on Monday Evenings and recently Gatwick Gaming has emerged and has won a Community Award for it's group, which runs on a Wednesday Evening.

Worthing Board Gamers host 2 regular weekly events as well as Game Days throughout the year.

Uckfield Tabletop Gamers host both a weekly session on Thursdays together with Game Days throughout the year.

Lewes Board Gamers host on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.

Mid Sussex War Gamers host an afternoon of gaming once a fortnight in East Grinstead.

Surrey Board Game Group in Horley also hosts days through the year.

Even if you don't live locally to us in Sussex and Surrey then I'm sure just by a little investigating online, maybe via Meetup, BoardGameGeek Forums or TableTop Magazine, then you'll find a group near you.

We hope you like what you've read and can make it to our next event, where we look forward to seeing you. In the mean time, stay safe, keep those dice rolling and the cards shuffling.

A abstract strategy, dice-manipulation game created by myself, Paul.

The Concept

Push D6 was originally created from an idea I had whilst driving to give those often cursed gaming implements a chance to shine when used for a higher, more controlled purpose. The original 2 player game, involves stratigic movement of dice in order to push your opponents dice off of the board, sumo style. The dice are rolled, face over face, orthagonally, changing the top result as it moves. Based on it's original value, the dice would have range and strength based on it's value. A 5 would have high movement, but movement comes at a cost, and could only ever push an opponents dice of equal or higher value. Whereby a lower number 2 for instance, would have stricter movement capacity but again push any other opponents dice of equal of higher value. The game has been reffered to as Chess Sumo by many a playtester over the last few years.

Current Status

The original game used a 6x6 grid with 6, 6-sided (D6) dice per player. Through a variety of playtests, both at local clubs and in the Playtest Zone at UK Game Expo, playtesters believed the manipulation of the dice around the board was a bit overly complicated. Although this is still a valid mode of play I set about redesigning the board layout, renumbering the dice so 2 opposite sides of each D6 Dice only have values of 1 thru 3. The number of dice being used, per player, has been cut to 4 but this has created the opportunity for a possible 2 or 4 player game using 2 dice per person based on 2, 2 player teams, sat opposite each other.
